The \"beep\", or avalanche beacon, is a winter hiking essential, along with the probe and shovel of course. All the devices on the market today meet the standards and are fully compatible with each other. In recent years, there have been a number of technical developments that have made the search considerably easier and faster. At the same time, the various brands have become increasingly specialised, which means that almost every device has to be operated differently. They have to be switched on and off differently, they can conduct a group check of a device differently and they can detect different distances. The use of a 'flag' or marking function for multiple burials may also differ. However, what is the same for all devices is the frequency range they emit as a signal, in all cases 457 kHz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The instructions for use must always be read carefully and the use of the device must be learnt and practised accordingly.
As the technology stands, digital devices with three antennas (e.g. Pieps DSP\/ Powder BT\/ Pro IPS, Arva Neo BT\/ Evo 5, Backcountry Access Tracker 3+\/4, Ortovox Diract\/ Diract voice, Mammut Barryvox\/ Barryvox S) have proven reliable over the years.
The third aerial - now a mandatory requirement - is a huge advantage if the avalanche victim is buried particularly deep in the snow bank.
In addition, only devices with a \"flag\" or marking function are recommended. On search devices equipped with this feature, we can turn off the signal of the companion we have found, and if there are more buried, we can continue the search.
In addition to this, it can also be useful if you find that several of your companions are under the snow, and the first one you find is very deep and will realistically take too long to dig out. We can then give the shallower buried a chance by \"turning off\" the first deep marker and continuing the search for the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1- or 2-antenna devices are only suitable for practising searches because they are outdated and unreliable.

3-antenna devices fall into three categories, which are reflected in their functionality and purchase price:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Entry-level devices have only the most basic features. They are usually small, easy to use and cost around \u20ac200; they are suitable for off-piste skiers near the slopes as they transmit signals perfectly, but they have limitations when searching. This means they are easy for others to find, but searching can be a little more difficult in some circumstances - but hopefully rescue professionals will be on the scene quickly to take over the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-The mid-range devices are used by 99% of skiers and 84% of mountain rescuers: they are suitable for all relevant searches. They are easy to use in practice and have several important functions. For example, the \"flag\" function mentioned above and the automatic switch back to \"SEND\" mode in the event of a second avalanche.
These are available for around \u20ac250.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-The top devices cost around \u20ac350. They have a lot of extra features that are rarely needed and require an absolute expert to use. They are recommended for those who are intensively and regularly involved in avalanche rescue, possibly also as instructors or mountain rescuers and guides. They will be able to exploit the potential of these avalanche beacons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following applies to all avalanche beacons: always read the instructions and search techniques carefully. Practise using it regularly! It is recommended to wear the devices over the front layer of clothing using the carrying system provided or in a zipped trouser pocket (not sewn on!). Even the most expensive avalanche beacon is useless if it is in the backpack or not switched on. Do a group beacon check before every hike!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
