Is it really as good as it is in the public mind? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\nAccording to several statistics, these backpacks would save between 35 and 81 people per 100 people. On average, 64. So of those who would otherwise have died, just over half would have a chance of survival with a deployed airbag. These figures are calculated from many years of accident data. Descriptions on the internet of a 97% survival rate should be treated with strong reservations, as a high percentage of avalanche accidents (around 81%) are survived by the people involved by default, e.g. they slip out, get stuck in a tree, the avalanche is too small to be buried or they are rescued by their beacon.
